Steven Mark Stangel

Steven Mark Stangel 65, of Friendswood, Texas, passed away June 24, 2018 at his home after an extended illness. He was born January 28,1953 in Sidney, Ohio to the late Victor and Betty (Stewart) Stangel. Mark “the name he preferred and was known by his many friends”, is survived by husband, Scot Duncil. They met June 23, 1980 in Dayton, OH, and celebrated their 38th anniversary on June 23rd 2018. Mark went on to be with the Lord June 24th 2018. Mark and Scot enjoyed many loving, exciting and happy years together, travelling the states and destinations abroad with their fondest memories being in Maui, Hawaii where they were married. Mark is was also survived by his sister, Cheryl and brother-in-law Dan VanFossen and many nieces and nephews. Also, pre-deceased nephew John Koewler Jr. and brother-in-law John W. Koewler, many cousins and one aunt, Virginia Stangel and uncle Harlan Stangel. Extended family that he dearly loved and were equally loved by include Delores Duncil, mother-in-law; Lynn and Jerry Coomer of Middletown, OH sister and brother-in-law; Kelly and Laura Duncil of Lakeview, OH, are brothers and sisters-in-law. Steven Mark was confirmed and baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sidney, OH, and since 1980 a member of Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church in Houston, TX. Mark graduated from Houston, OH, high school in 1971 and obtained a Degree in Economics at Sinclair College, Dayton, OH. Mark retired from Western Integrated Technologies in September of 2016. Within weeks of meeting in Dayton, OH, Mark and Scot moved to Houston, TX. to start their newly- found journey together. Scot's job took them to Los Gatos, CA in 1987. However, the Loma Prieta earthquake during the World Series of 1989 sent them back to Houston until relocating to Portland, OR in 2002. There, through Scot's Fraternal affiliations, several Masons and Shriners and their Ladies and friends were fortunate to meet Mark and know of his quick wit, humor, hospitality and great cooking skills. The Bunco parties he hosted are still being talked about and his friendly demeanor and tender smile will never be forgotten by those blessed to have known him. There are several wonderful, loving and caring individuals, all deserving to be acknowledged, but simply too many to mention. It would be remiss to not recognize Rose and Bud James, kindred spirits if you will. Mark and Rose spent lots of time sharing recipes, cooking and a little wine every now and then. Ralph Jubb always had kind words and little jabs for Mark as well as keeping Scot busy in the Oriental Band and Q. When Mark first met MaryAnn Wood, he was shocked but soon grew to love this colorful and larger than life wonderful woman. Whenever Mark attended events and many functions of which the Shriners are known, he was always warmly welcomed. Thank you on behalf of Mark for making him part of the family. Scot’s job involved frequent relocations. Mark embraced each move, putting his unique touch on each apartment, condo and house, all of which embodied the word HOME. Mark had a passion for cooking and baking, everything from comfort food using the techniques learned from his dear mother as well as trying new dishes and various foreign cuisine. Though his cookbook collection was extensive, Mark was not intimidated by many recipes. Mark and Scot also had a cumulative a collection of wines from travels to California's and Oregon's wine country with Russian River and Dundee Valleys being their favorites. Mark also has an extensive collection of hundreds of pieces of Hull and Stangl antique pottery. A Celebration of Mark's Life will be 2:00pm, Saturday, 21 July at Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church, 2025 W 11th Street, Houston, TX 77008, www.resurrectionmcc.org.
