Lawrence Paul Tully's Obituary
Lawrence Paul Tully, born on December 21, 1941, in Harlem, New York, passed away from this
life on January 28, 2025, in Houston, Texas. His life was a tapestry woven with love, resilience,
and an enduring connection to those he held dear.
Lawrence is lovingly remembered by his daughters: Nicole Brigette Tully, Kimberly Ann Potts,
and Karen Elizabeth Baldwin. He leaves behind six grandchildren who brought immense joy to
his life: Kyla Bethany Michelle Harleaux, Nikolaus Lawrence Potts, Tristen Shandy, Laila
Simone Baldwin, Zoe Yvonne Baldwin, and Elijah Jack "EJ" Baldwin. He is also survived by his
brother Leonard Alan Tully and his ex-wife and lifelong friend Marilyn Tully. Preceding him in
death were his father Clarence Walter Tully; mother Etta Applewhite; brothers Charlie and
Richard Applewhite; and sisters Frieda and Betty Pickett.
From humble beginnings in Harlem to a career of dedication spanning decades at New York
Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, Lawrence’s journey was one of perseverance and purpose. At
the tender age of nine, he began working as a delivery boy for ice—a role that instilled in him a
strong work ethic early on. As a teenager and young adult, he continued to shoulder
responsibility by delivering groceries via horse-drawn carriage through the streets of Harlem and
later honing his skills as a lathe worker at a machinery plant.
In 1968, Lawrence embarked on what would become a remarkable 35-plus-year career as a
morgue attendant and autopsy specialist at New York Methodist Hospital. It was during this time
that he welcomed his first daughter, Nicole Brigette Tully, with Velma Eugenia Young. While
working at the hospital that became like a second home to him over the years, Lawrence met
Marilyn Tully—the mother of his two younger daughters—and together they built cherished
memories that lasted long after their marriage ended.
Lawrence had an extraordinary ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Known for
never meeting a stranger, he had an innate gift for making everyone feel welcome. His passion
for music spanned every genre imaginable—an enthusiasm he shared freely—and movies were
another avenue through which he connected with others. These interests became threads that
tied him to those around him while also providing moments of joy throughout his own life.
As a father and grandfather, Lawrence imparted invaluable lessons about perseverance and
acceptance while fostering deep bonds within his family. He taught his daughters not only the
importance of hard work but also the significance of embracing family connections—a legacy
they will carry forward in their own lives.
Lawrence’s warmth extended far beyond his immediate family; it radiated into every interaction
he had throughout his lifetime. Those fortunate enough to know him will remember not only the
love he gave but also the way he made them feel seen and valued.
May Lawrence Paul Tully’s memory bring solace to all who knew him and inspire them to live
with the same openness of heart that defined his remarkable life.
