HISTORY OF THE EVERSBERG NAME
Originated from a southern town in Germany in the 17th century that was spelled Eversburg on the map, but an "e" on signs in the town. I have two small shot glasses and a glass with the logo of a "Boar of the Hills" which is what the name means. A friend of mine years ago popped off by saying "I always knew you were a boar" so we got some laughs out of that. It is about the size of Brenham, Texas where the name continued: The Prairie Lea Cemetery there has a plot for just the Eversbergs where my dad's parents were buried years ago. My mother and dad are buried there in 1961 and 1963. Nancy and I have sites in that plot for our burials. My dad's parents, Emil and Sarah Eversberg were from Germany.
There are other Eversbergs in that cemetery: Dr. Charles Eversberg, a dentist, his son, Charles Jr., that was a doctor, and Alma Eversberg, Dr. Charles's wife. They have their own plot. There were or might still be some Eversbergs in Baton Rouge, LA., as they were or are sons of Hervey Eversberg, son of Dr. Charles. They are A & M graduates...I have lost contact with them.
My dad is the continuation of his parents: Eugene August Eversberg Sr. He was born in Brenham and his parents died at an early age so Dr. Charles raised my dad and his brother Otto and sent them through Texas A & M. My dad was in the Ross Volunteers and his brother Otto was Captain of the baseball team. My dad graduated as a 2nd Lt. and went to WWI overseas. When back, he opened up a Humpty Dumpty and a Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Brenham. We moved to Houston in 1932 where my dad founded the Minimax stores and had 5 of them. First one was at Westheimer and Waugh Drive-building still there, others in other parts of Houston. When WWII got started he got called up for active duty in the Texas National Guard as a full Bird Colonel. Went to Scotland, Ireland, England and wound up in Berlin in charge of the Red Ball express that supplied General George Patton's army. This was my dad's second trip to Paris and Berlin - WWI and WWII as a Brigadier General. He returned to civilian life as the executive director of the Houston Housing Authority..then retired with his with, Edna.
I went to school in Brenham, Woodrow Wilson Elementary, Lanier Junior, Lamar Senior and was in first graduating class of 1940. We had 571..and in 1990 we had over 300 for a reunion! I went to Texas A & M for one year. Joined the Army Air Corps known as then in 1943. Became a 4 engine B-17 pilot, single engine instructor. Graduated from U of H in 1948 and was a manufacturer's salesman until retirement in the early 70's. My sister was married to an Ostner and they lived in Huntsville, Alabama, now deceased.
I carried on the Eversberg name with pride, as has your dad now. As it is a respected name in the business world, and Shrine for me for 30 years.
Signed,
Eugene A. Eversberg, Jr.
