Bobby Waggoner was many things to those that loved him. He was a Son, a Brother, a Husband, a Father, a Grandfather, and a Friend. Each of us knew him in a different way. But, we all loved him for who he was and what he meant to us.
Bobby loved family, fishing, hunting, racing cars, and having fun. We all knew that Bobby was COOL and that he was the leader of the pack. But, here is a little story that shows a side of him that most did not see.
It was the summer of 1999. Bobby traveled to Amarillo for a visit with his Mom, his Dad, his Sister (Roz), his Brother (Randy), and the ‘outlaws’ (including me).
While there, a baby sparrow fell from its nest above his parent’s front door. Bobby and Roz found the little bird and immediately decided to save it. They spent the rest of their time in Amarillo giving the baby water and food. The water came through an eyedropper. The food was from Gerber.
Roz and I took the baby sparrow home to Boulder with us in a tiny cardboard box. We named it Tweeter. Over the next weeks Tweeter grew and traded his baby coat for feathers. The little bird learned to fly inside our house. Tweeter sat on Roz’s shoulder or rested on the Kitchen windowsill. Eventually, Tweeter flew outdoors and returned to Roz’s shoulder.
Bobby and Roz, a Brother and Sister working together, saved Tweeter the sparrow.
On April 4, 2017, those of us that were there, sat on Bobby’s covered back patio between 10 pm and midnight. We talked about our feelings, about our loss, and about many of the memories we had of Bobby.
While we sat there a tiny bird sang to us in the dark. I believe that little bird was singing for Bobby.
